What the job actually is

Practical work, trained from scratch

This is not office work. It is lofts, roofs, cellars and commercial kitchens, in weather that does not care. In return it is a trade you can hold for life, and one that is genuinely short of people.

Every role here is cross-trainable. People move between pest control, proofing, heat treatment and roofing as they find what they are good at.

Hours

40 to 45 hours a week depending on shift pattern.

Earnings

On-target earnings of 40,000 and above, made up of base pay plus overtime and commission. The salary shown against each role below is the base band, before any overtime or commission.

Training

Six of the eight roles need no previous experience. You learn on the job alongside qualified technicians and work towards a recognised qualification.

Trainee Pest Control Technician

£26,000 to £32,000 base, plus overtime and commission

No experience needed, full training given

The way most people join this industry. You learn the pests, the treatments and the paperwork on the job, working alongside qualified technicians until you are running your own route.

Attend residential and commercial jobs with an experienced technician
Learn identification, treatment choice and proofing
Work towards a recognised pest management qualification
Keep accurate treatment records from day one

Experienced Pest Control Technician

£30,000 to £38,000 base, plus overtime and commission

Qualified and experienced

For technicians who already hold a pest management qualification and want a route of their own, with the backing of a BPCA member company behind them.

Run your own route of residential and commercial jobs
Survey, treat and proof against every common UK pest
Produce audit-ready documentation for commercial clients
Support trainees working alongside you

Heat Treatment Technician

£30,000 to £40,000 base, plus overtime and commission

No experience needed, full training given

Heat treatment is the chemical-free route for bed bugs and stored product insects. It is equipment-heavy, methodical work and it is trained from scratch.

Set up and monitor heat treatment equipment on site
Work to temperature and duration targets across a whole property
Prepare rooms and protect heat-sensitive contents
Record temperature data as evidence of a completed treatment

Bird Control Technician

£30,000 to £35,000 base, plus overtime and commission

No experience needed, full training given

Proofing buildings against pigeons and gulls, working at height on commercial and residential roofs. Training is provided, including access qualifications.

Install netting, spikes and wire systems at height
Survey roofs and elevations for access points
Clear and disinfect fouling safely
Work to method statements and risk assessments

Solar Panel Proofing Installer

£30,000 to £35,000 base, plus overtime and commission

No experience needed, full training given

Pigeons nest under solar arrays and the mess ends up in the gutters and the loft. This role fits mesh systems around panels without disturbing the array.

Fit proofing mesh around solar arrays on domestic roofs
Clear existing nesting and fouling before proofing
Work safely at height from ladders and towers
Leave the array performing as it did before the visit

Roofer

£30,000 to £35,000 base, plus overtime and commission

Trade experience required

Pest work and roof work meet constantly. Rodents and birds get in through defects, and somebody has to put the roof right once the pests are out.

Repair tiles, ridges, flashing and fascias
Close entry points found during pest surveys
Work alongside proofing and pest teams on the same property
Advise on what needs replacing rather than patching

Loft Insulation Installer

£30,000 to £35,000 base, plus overtime and commission

No experience needed, full training given

Rodent-damaged insulation has to come out and be replaced. This role handles the removal, the clearance and the reinstatement.

Remove contaminated or damaged loft insulation
Install replacement insulation to the correct depth
Work in confined and dusty spaces with the right protection
Leave lofts clean and correctly boarded where required

Clearance Operative

£30,000 to £35,000 base, plus overtime and commission

No experience needed, full training given

Some jobs need clearing before anything can be treated. This role handles the heavy end of that work, in properties that are rarely pleasant.

Clear and dispose of contaminated material
Deep clean after infestations
Work to biohazard procedures with the right protective equipment
Prepare properties so treatment and proofing can follow
